Commentary: 'King of the Hill' still in charge

NEW YORK (AP) -- "I'll have a normal orange juice, please," says Hank Hill. "And make it normal."

He wishes!Hank, plaintive hero of Fox's comedy "King of the Hill," is joining someone at a dang ol' prissy juice bar. Not by his choice. This is not Hank's kind of place.

Nor are these his kind of times.Never were. After a decade on the air, "King of the Hill" (starting its new season 8:30 p.m. EST Sunday) finds Hank pretty much where he was in January 1997: a Texas good ol' boy in a world bent on serving up things that, in his mind, just aren't normal. Hank's a regular guy in a world that's always redefining "regular."

Hank doesn't smile much. He's sad-eyed, with fretful little furrows etched into his brow.Even so, he loves his job as a propane salesman, and also "loves barbecue, pickup trucks, edging the lawn, both kinds of music (country and western), and lamenting how a lack of common sense and a crush of meddling bureaucrats in today's society make life all that much harder for the working man."

At least, that's how I described him 10 years ago, when reviewing the premiere of this animated yet staunchly uncartoonish sitcom.

I could've added that Hank's a churchgoer and a family man (sturdy wife Peggy; slothful 13-year-old son Bobby; coquettish niece Luanne, 18) who, with his high school football days long gone, plays a new team sport: posting himself with buddies Dale, Bill and Boomhauer out by the street, standing side by side, saying little, beers in hand.

Snacking a Broadway showstopper

NEW YORK (AP) -- Patti LuPone could not believe her ears.

"There was this woman in the first row, eating out of a paper bag, so loudly that even people around her were trying to get her to stop," an appalled LuPone said of the incident during her Broadway run in the musical "Sweeney Todd."

Another actor on stage used her prop -- a flute -- to nudge the woman to stop eating, reaching into the audience with the instrument and pushing down on the woman's bag of snacks, LuPone said.

"But the woman kept eating whatever it was -- things that came out in little balls."

Such encounters have become increasingly common in theaters up and down Broadway, where the sound of music is sometimes mixed with a symphony of snacking. More Broadway theaters are allowing people to bring drinks, candy, chips and even popcorn to their seats as they try to boost their bottom lines. And the bottom line is -- the bottom line. Concession sales at the Hilton Theatre have more than doubled since refreshments were allowed into the shows about three years ago.

To eat or not to eat is an issue that has divided Broadway. The Shubert Organization, which operates 17 theaters, does not permit food or drinks into performances. The Nederlander Organization allows snacks into most of its shows, especially venues that are staging family fare such as "The Lion King" and "Beauty and the Beast." Nederlander also allows people to bring in wine poured into spill-proof cups.

Nederlander Vice President Jim Boese defended the organization's selling of snacks.

"This is not an orgy of gorging -- it's just a recognition of reality," he said.

"We're trying to be responsive to consumers, and we've found that more and more parents and others are asking for certain kinds of snacks," Boese said. "We've served Twizzlers forever. This is about creating a broader array of things that people can eat."

James Brown's children: Assets mismanaged

COLUMBIA, South Carolina (AP) -- James Brown's six adult children believe the soul singer's valuable estate was mismanaged and want the trustees removed, according to court documents.

An emergency petition filed late Wednesday in Aiken County also claimed that some of Brown's assets are in danger of being "lost or dissipated or stolen."The irrevocable trust, signed in 2000, is said to contain most of Brown's primary assets, including music rights and his 60-acre Beech Island home.

The trust is separate from Brown's will, which was filed separately last week and divided personal possessions such as clothes, jewelry and automobiles among the children.

Trustee Buddy Dallas, also an attorney for Brown, said everything in the trust was handled "appropriately and properly" when the 73-year-old entertainer died December 25.

"I've been Mr. Brown's trusted friend and counsel for 24 years -- a relationship that was built totally on our trust," Dallas said. "And I never violated that trust for 24 years."A court hearing was scheduled for February 1.

Overzealous censor edits 'God' out of 'Queen'

ATLANTA, Georgia (AP) -- So much for God and country, at least during some in-flight showings of the Oscar-nominated movie "The Queen." That's because all mentions of God were bleeped out in a version of the film given to some commercial airlines.

Even in these politically correct times, censoring references to God in the film was not a statement of some kind. Rather, it was the mistake of an overzealous and inexperienced employee for a California company that edits movies selected for onboard entertainment. The censor was told to edit out all profanities -- including any blasphemy -- for the version of the movie distributed to Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines, Air New Zealand, and other carriers.

So the new censor mistakenly bleeped out each time a character said "God," instead of just when it was used as part of a profanity, said Jeff Klein, president of Jaguar Distribution, the company that distributed the movie to airlines this month.

"A reference to God is not taboo in any culture that I know of," Klein said. "We excise foul language, excessive violence and nudity."

In-flight viewers of the film at one point heard "(Bleep) bless you, ma'am," as one character spoke to the queen. In all, the word "God" is bleeped seven times in the version.Klein discovered the mistake after a London-bound Air New Zealand passenger complained earlier this month and the airline apologized for showing "the incorrect version of the film."

Airlines routinely work with studios to get film versions that have removed the kind of graphic scenes and strong profanities that would not be shown on network TV, Delta spokeswoman Betsy Talton said. Officials with Delta and Air New Zealand say their airlines have been showing the edited version of 'The Queen' on many international flights.Jaguar has been replacing all the cassettes it sent out -- in English and other languages -- to its airline clients with the original, unedited version of the movie.

Brandy involved, uninjured in fatal crash

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- R&B singer Brandy was involved in a four-car freeway crash last month that left a 38-year-old woman dead, authorities said Wednesday.

The cause of the mishap was under investigation, and no arrests have been made.
The 27-year-old actress-singer (full name: Brandy Norwood) was driving a 2007 Land Rover on the 405 Freeway on December 30, when the collision occurred. She failed to slow down and struck the back of a 2005 Honda at about 65 mph, according to a California Highway Patrol report.

Aboudihaj was taken to a hospital, where she died of blunt-force injuries, said county coroner's spokesman Craig Harvey. The coroner's office ruled her death an accident.Ham also was taken to a hospital where she was treated for moderate injuries.Brandy was not injured, and she wasn't under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash, said her publicist Courtney Barnes.

WILSON BACK ON WITH HUDSON

The couple - who have previously denied they are dating - met on the set of romantic comedy "You, Me and Dupree" and were seen together on several occasions after Hudson filed for divorce from rocker Chris Robinson shortly after the film was released last autumn.

Wilson has now spent a week in Australia with the "Almost Famous" actress who is filming her latest movie "Fool's Gold" with Matthew McConaughey in Queensland. A source told the New York Daily News newspaper: "Owen backed out of spending Christmas and New Year with Kate because he didn't want to deal with the whole situation with her family."

"There was Chris and the baby, and also her parents Goldie and Kurt don't approve of the relationship."
Hudson, 27, is the daughter of Goldie Hawn and 'step-daughter' of Goldie's long-term partner Kurt Russell. She has a three-year-old son, Ryder, with estranged husband Robinson.
A representative for Wilson has said he is currently in India. However, a source on set in Australia said: "Kate had a very close, friendly relationship with the paparazzi on set, but she changed her tune earlier this week."

"There was a five-day period when she requested no photographers. Her people even threatened to get the police on them if they didn't leave her alone

CLOONEY DATING PAMELA ANDERSON?

The pair - who recently dined in a private room at California's Valley Inn restaurant - were seen flirting as Pamela sat in George's lap and whispered in his ear.
Since then George and Pamela have been inseparable, even walking their dogs together.

A source revealed: "George and Pam have been determined to keep this one quiet."
Pamela - who is currently divorcing Kid Rock after a three-month marriage - has been recently romantically linked to R'n'B singer Usher, a Hell's Angel and her bodyguard.
Meanwhile, George has said he will not replace Max with a new pig.

The Oscar-winning actor, who was left devastated when his beloved pet died last year, says Max will never be replaced in his affections - but he is considering buying other animals.
George insisted: "Max was irreplaceable. But I will get another pet, maybe a goat would be good."

The 45-year-old "Syriana" actor says he has been swamped with new pigs from kind fans wanting to cheer him up.
George said: "I have found good homes for all the pigs I was sent when Max died."

NICK LACHEY'S APRIL WEDDING

The former "The Newlyweds" star - who divorced Jessica Simpson last year - has proposed to the MTV presenter and she is telling friends to keep April free.
A source told the National Enquirer magazine: "They're moving forward with plans for an April wedding."

"Since they both love Baja in Mexico it will probably happen south of the border, where they first fell in love."

"When he married Jessica, Nick had a big splashy Texas wedding with all the trimmings."

"It kicked off their highly rated MTV reality series 'Newlyweds' and began their life in a fishbowl. This time he wants something a lot simpler, so they decided on a low-key affair." Nick, 33, announced his split from Jessica in late 2005 and began dating 26-year-old Vanessa last summer.

The source added: "Nick's known for a long time that Vanessa is the one. At first she held out. But in time she began to realize Nick was the key to her happiness and couldn't imagine like without him."

"Vanessa feel's she's got Nick just where she wants him. Jessica is finally out of the picture for good. And now the two of them are ready to begin making a new life together."

Victoria Beckham & Holmes: Stylish In Paris

Victoria Beckham is hoping her move to the United States will help take her fashion career on to the next level, which her cosmetics company is helping to make a reality. And when the mother-of-three paid a visit to Paris this week, it was quite evident that she can count on plenty of A-list support from both sides of the Atlantic.

The former Spice Girl, who was in Paris to check out the latest styles at the Paris shows, was keeping company with her pal Katie Holmes. The two women met up with their mutual friend, Giorgio Armani, at the opening of his new boutique in the French capital after Victoria had earlier dropped in to catch the latest Chanel collection with German style guru Karl Lagerfeld.

Meanwhile, meeting up with old friends wasn’t the only reason for the visit to Paris, though. The 32-year-old also held a meeting with cosmetic giant Coty to discuss marketing her and David’s best-selling Intimately Beckham scents across the pond. According to media reports, the glamorous couple stands to earn an extra $11 million from the range as a result of their newfound popularity stateside.

Victoria and Katie were looking characteristically chic as they enjoyed themselves in the City of Light. The British star wore a simple prom-style dress with one of her hallmark oversize belts, while her companion was elegant in a black velvet number with matching high-necked jacket.

Whitney Houston & Ray J dating?

Gossip columnist Janet Charlton and numerous other bloggers are currently claiming that 43-year-old diva Whitney Houston (who recently separated from her husband of 14 years, Bobby Brown) is already dating 26-year-old R&B singer Ray J, the younger brother of Brandy.

While Houston and Ray J (real name: William Ray Norwood Jr.) have not admitted that they are romantically involved, paparazzi photos of the pair leaving the Beverly Hills eatery Maestro's Steakhouse together--after reportedly having dinner there on Sunday, January 21--seem to substantiate rumors of their supposed May-December romance.

According to Charlton, "Whitney Houston is in LOVE," Houston and Ray J have already moved in together, and Houston spent the holidays with the Norwood family. Charlton also writes on her website, janetcharltonshollywood.com, about alleged Houston/Ray J spa vacations in Santa Barbara and plans for Ray J to appear on Houston's much-anticipated comeback album.

Lindsay Lohan Banned From Sundance By Doctors

Lindsay has been told by doctors at her rehab facility that she will not be attending the premiere of her new movie release. The sunglass and lip gloss loving actress, who checked herself into the Wonderland Center in Los Angeles’ Laurel Canyon last on January 17th, was hoping to attend the launch of her crime drama “Chapter 27” at the Sundance Film festival in Park City, Utah this week.

However, Lindsay was banned from attending by her doctors, who feared it might harm her progress.A Life Style Extra release quoted a source ass saying:
“The doctors have told her she has got to stay put as leaving the center would interfere with her treatment.”
The counselors were appropriately worried the 20-year-old might give in to temptation and start drinking again.

Her publicist, Leslie Zelnick, said: “She will continue working but will spend her nights at the recovery facility.”

It is good to see that Lindsay is doing what needs to be done to clean herself up. Park City probably was not the best idea, seeing that she has been clean a whole week and all.

Paris Hilton Taking Website To Court

Now that the DUI case has been settled, Paris’ team of lawyers are switching from defendants to plaintiffs.
Paris Hilton may be making her way back to court, this time to sue a website.

The legal action will reportedly concern a new website launched on January 23, 2007, that is providing access to personal items belonging to the hotel empire heiress. The items include personal pictures, diaries, and contacts....including the cell phone numbers of Paris’s friends.

According to InTheNews, website creator Bardia Persa obtained the items after Paris failed to make payments at a Los Angeles storage facility. The items were turned over to a broker and Ms. Persa is said to have picked up the items at an auction for around $2,300.

Don’t sign up too quickly, though. Paris is reportedly trying to shut the website down. “We certainly are going to explore all of our legal options about this matter,” said her spokesperson Elliot Mintz. If they succeed, which is quite likely, subscriptions will end and you may just be out $40.

Also worth noting, Paris is not the only celebrity to be exposed for failing to make payments at a storage facility. This month a New Jersey storage company auctioned off items belonging to

Jessica Alba and Tom Cruise Team-Up

In a recent press release, Jessica Alba is reported to be set to star in a new horror movie produced by none other than Tom Cruise. The lovely Ms. Alba is rumored to have signed a $4 million deal with Tom’s company. With low interest loans available, it would not be surprising if Tom borrowed to get the actress signed right away.

The film is called ‘The Eye’ and will be a Hollywood remake of the 2002 Hong Kong film Jian Gui where Allison, to be played by Jessica, receives an eye transplant which allows her to see into the supernatural world.

The horror movie, which will be filmed in Albuquerque, New Mexico, will be produced by Cruise/Wagner productions, according to World Entertainment News Network.Signing onto this project will make 2007 an even busier year for an already strapped Alba.
She is currently working on a number of movies including the sequels to Sin City and Fantastic Four. Along with these, her new thriller, Awake, which sees her star alongside Hayden Christensen will also be released this year.

It is still unknown whether Tom will be starring in the film alongside Jessica. He has been known to take the lead roles in a number of his productions including the Mission Impossible series, War of the Worlds and Minority Report. We’ll have to wait and see, but it is difficult to believe that any man would pass up the chance to work side-by-side with Jessica Alba.

K-Fed Pushes Britney Spears Towards Rehab

Now that Lindsay Lohan has taken the plunge, it seems that Britney Spears is being pushed to follow suit. It seems all too funny, but is K-Fed playing the role of responsible parent?

Federline is urging his estranged wife, Britney, to get into rehab. He has not yet offered to foot the credit card bill (these places cost thousands and thousands of dollars!), yet he is adamant that she needs to go.

“Kevin has tried to convince Britney to check herself into rehab from every possible angle,” a source from msnbc online stated. “First he tried threatening to take away the kids, then he tried pleading with her to take care of herself.”K-Fed even joined forces with his former nemesis, Britney’s mother, in an effort to convince the singer to get help. “He’s afraid she’s going to hurt herself,” said the source.

Federline is also concerned that Brit does not spend enough time with their children, claims the insider. “They’re being raised by strangers,” he said. “He told Britney to get help before it’s too late.”It is a bit scary that all of these young stars seem to be having complete meltdowns. If true, it is hoped that Britney does what she needs to do to take care of herself.

Brandy At Fault For Fatal Accident?

Actress and R&B singer Brandy was involved in a fatal, four-car accident on a Los Angeles freeway last month that started when her SUV hit another car, police released on Wednesday January 24. Auto insurance is required in California. The car insurance company most likely will become involved, as the payouts to the victims will undoubtedly be quite high.

The 27-year-old, Brandy, was not injured, but the driver of the car she rear-ended with her Land Rover in the December 30th crash died, according to the California Highway Patrol. The victim was identified as Awatef Aboudihaj, 38, a married mother of one, said California Highway Patrol spokesman Leland Tang.
No charges or arrests have been made in connection with the accident, and no formal determination has been made as to what caused the crash, which was first reported by TMZ

A statement issued by Brandy’s publicist said: “She wishes to publicly express her condolences to the family of the deceased” and asks the media to “respect the privacy of everyone involved at this time.”

The singer-actress, whose full name is Brandy Norwood, was alone in her vehicle and no alcohol or drugs were involved, Tang said.
Brandy told officers she was driving at about 65 miles per hour before the crash occurred.

“We’ve impounded all four vehicles, and the outcome of the mechanical inspection is coming to us today or tomorrow,” Tang said.

“Barring any mechanical difficulties on Brandy’s part ... then there’s the very high probability that she is the party most at fault or the contributing party.

Nicole Kidman Involved In ‘On The Set’ Accident

In a breaking news release that has sent paparazzi scurryining with their olympus
cameras and tape recorders, Nicole Kidman was rushed to a hospital on Thursday January 25, after the car she was in crashed into a light pole, police said.
Her husband, Keith Urban who was recently released from rehab, was on the set with her and witnessed the accident, as well as her son Connor Cruise, 11, Us Weekly reported.

According to the magazine, Nicole was on set, driving a Jaguar and was trying to get rid of a crowd of zombie-like characters for a scene in “The Invasion.” The car was being towed by a rig, driven by a stunt driver, so that it would appear that she was really driving.
“The stunt driver apparently went off course and hit a light post at about 1 a.m.,”
police Officer Karen Smith said.
“Luckily, both the actress and her costar, a young boy sitting in the passenger seat, were wearing seat belts. Members of the crew immediately wrapped a blanket around Kidman and paramedics arrived to check the actress for injuries,” Us said.

No other actors were involved in the scene at the time of the incident. Two additional crew members sustained minor injuries as a result of the collision,” a statement from the studio, released Thursday, said.
LAPD Capt. Andrew Smith said the injuries were mostly minor.

“She had a boo-boo. But one of the people involved suffered a broken arm,” Smith said.
The accident is being investigated by Central Division traffic officers.

In the film being shot, Nicole stars as a Washington psychiatrist who discovers the origin of an alien epidemic and suspects her son might be contaminated, too. She is working to find a cure with the help of a colleague before time runs out.

Dakota Fanning: 'It's called acting'

PARK CITY, Utah (AP) -- At a festival that features several films with sexual content, including full male nudity and a documentary about bestiality, a Southern Gothic tale that includes the rape of a young girl is causing the biggest stir.

"Hounddog" is the story of Lewellen, a girl played by 12-year-old Dakota Fanning, who is growing up in the 1960s South. She is a free-spirit obsessed with Elvis Presley and has little supervision by her abusive father and alcoholic grandmother.
Even before the first screening of "Hounddog" at the Sundance Film Festival this week, a Christian film critic, citing Fanning's age, decried the movie as child abuse, and Roman Catholic activist Bill Donohue called for a federal investigation.

Fanning is defending her work as well as the movie, and so is the head of Sundance, who said it was courageous for director Deborah Kampmeier to tackle "challenging material." "Hounddog" is entered in the festival's dramatic category.
"It's not a rape movie," Fanning said Tuesday. "That's not even the point of the film."

Fanning is upset at people who have criticized her family and colleagues.

"When it gets to the point of attacking my mother, my agent ... my teacher, who were all on the set that day, that started to make me mad," she said in an interview with Reuters.

"I can let other things go, but when people start to talk about my mother, like, that's really bad in my opinion ... that's an attack, and that's not fair. They hadn't seen the movie," she added.
The disturbing scene lasts a few minutes but is not graphic. There is no nudity, the scene is very darkly lit and only Fanning's face and hand are shown.Kampmeier said it took her a decade to get the film made, largely because of the rape scene, but cutting it was a compromise she was unwilling to make.

"This issue is so silenced in our society. There are a lot of women who are alone with this story," she said.

"When you're shooting a film, it's the images you line up next to each other that create a story," Kampmeier said. "If you have a hand hitting the ground, Dakota screaming 'stop' and you see a zipper unzip -- that creates a rape."

Marilyn Manson Reciprocates Divorce

No big surprise, but apparently Marilyn Manson is more of a Halloween guy.

At least, that's the holiday he cited as the date on which he and estranged wife Dita Von Teese went their separate ways, disputing her claim that the glam-Goth twosome uncoupled on Christmas Eve. Manson counter-filed for divorce last Friday in an attempt to block Von Teese from being awarded spousal support, although the burlesque performer did not request it when she filed her own divorce petition Dec. 29.

Her heavily made-up hubby has also stated that he wants Von Teese to pay her own attorney fees, while she has requested that he pay for the breakup proceedings. The duo did agree, however, on the cause of the split—irreconcilable differences across the board.

Manson has since been linked to 19-year-old Evan Rachel Wood, who stars in the hard rocker's upcoming feature directorial debut, Phantasmagoria: The Visions of Lewis Carroll. Manson has stated that his aim for the film is to "redefine the horror genre." While part of the blame for Manson's impending divorce has been placed on his increasingly hard-partying ways over the past year, per People magazine, it's his relationship with Wood that appears to be the major contributing factor.

The Antichrist Superstar artist and Von Teese tied the knot in December 2005 at a friend's lavish home in County Tipperary, Ireland, in front of 60 guests. The bride, not one for your traditional white, wore a royal purple silk taffeta gown, replete with corset, petticoats and a lengthy train. Manson took a more understated approach, for him, in a velvet-trimmed black tuxedo and matching hat.

But divorce proceedings aren't the only thing on Manson's mind. Perhaps as a diversionary tactic, the shock-rocker just issued a press release touting his next album, Eat Me, Drink Me. Manson said he's almost completed work on the album, and it will be out this spring followed by a world tour.

Brandy involved in fatal traffic crash

R&B singer Brandy was involved in a four-car freeway crash last month that left a 38-year-old woman dead, authorities said WednesdayThe cause of the mishap was under investigation, and no arrests have been made. The 27-year-old actress-singer (full name: Brandy Norwood) was driving a 2007 Land Rover on the 405 Freeway on Dec. 30, when the collision occurred.

She failed to slow down and struck the back of a 2005 Honda at about 65 mph, according to a California Highway Patrol report
The Honda driven by Awatef Aboudihaj, 38, hit another vehicle and then slid sideways before it struck a center divider, the report said.

Aboudihaj's car was then hit by an oncoming car driven by 50-year-old Mallory Ham, the report said.Aboudihaj was taken to a hospital, where she died of blunt-force injuries, said county coroner's spokesman Craig Harvey. The coroner's office ruled her death an accident.
Ham also was taken to a hospital where she was treated for moderate injuries.

Brandy was not injured, and she wasn't under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash, said her publicist Courtney Barnes.

"She wishes to publicly express her condolences to the family of the deceased," Barnes said.
A message left for a CHP spokesman was not immediately returned Wednesday.

Norwood, whose hits include "Sittin' Up in My Room" and "The Boy Is Mine," has made five albums and earned a Grammy in 1999. She began her recording career at 14 and acted in film and TV shows, starring on the sitcom "Moesha" from 1996 to 2001 and most recently as a judge for NBC's "America's Got Talent."

David Lee Roth And Van Halen Will Rock

It turns out David Lee Roth was right. Not about fashion sense or talk radio, mind you, but about the inevitability of a Van Halen reunion.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-bound band-Roth included-is now thisclose to inking a deal with Live Nation for a 40-date amphitheater tour, Billboard.com reported Wednesday.
Roth, who unceremoniously parted ways with Van Halen in 1985, told the music magazine's Website eight months ago that getting him and his former hair-band brothers back together would not be "rocket surgery."

"It's very simple to put together," Roth said. "And as far as hurt feelings and water under the dam, like what's-her-name at the end of the movie Chicago-'So what? It's showbiz!' So I definitely see it happening."
And, somehow, Roth's career in morning radio hadn't taken off by then.

The former heavy metal frontman last rocked out with his fellow "Hot for Teacher" artists in 1996, when they recorded a few songs that ended up on the greatest hits album Best of Volume I. But an appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards that year by all four original band mates-siblings Eddie and Alex Van Halen, Roth and bassist Michael Anthony-proved that the guys weren't really ready to reconcile.

While fans hoped that their group showing-the quartet's first public appearance together in 11 years-was a sign of a full-fledged reunion, Roth issued a statement several weeks later saying he'd been the "unwitting participant" in a publicity stunt engineered to sell more copies of Best of Volume I, and that he told Eddie at the time that he didn't "think it was a good idea for the band to go to New York half-cocked.
The Van Halen brothers and Anthony denied Roth's take on the situation, saying "the intention all along was to do two new songs" and that Roth was "never led to believe anything but that."

Despite the inauspicious undertones of that exchange, along with Roth's comment to tmz.com last month characterizing a possible Van Halen reunion as "Jerry Springer meets Knots Landing," it looks as if fans are going to get the chance to "Jump" for Roth, Eddie & Co. after all, with Billboard reporting that a contract could be signed as early as Wednesday.

Anthony, however, will not be along for the proposed ride, having since joined up with Van Halen's second former frontman Sammy Hagar for a series of shows in which they billed themselves as The Other Half and performed both Roth and Van Hagar-era Van Halen tunes.
Instead, Eddie's 15-year-old son, Wolfgang, will take over bass responsibilities when the band hits the road again, a notion that apparently doesn't sit well with Hagar, who last performed with Van Halen in the summer of 2004.

Ray J : Whitney Houston & Ray J dating?

OPRAH'S FIRST BETRAYAL

Oprah Winfrey cried for three days after her half-sister revealed the chat show host had a baby when she was just 14. The TV presenter does not name her half-sister, Patricia Lloyd, in the February issue of O, The Oprah Magazine, but writes of the betrayal she felt when "a relative" sold the story to US gossip magazine The National Enquirer.

Oprah said: "She sat in a room, told them the story of my hidden shame and left their offices $19,000 richer."

"I took to my bed and cried for three days. I felt devastated, wounded, betrayed. How could this person do this to me?"
The chat show host - who, following the revelation in 1990, told Parade magazine that year her baby had been born prematurely and died weeks later in hospital - said the secret proved to be much less shameful than she imagined.

She said: "Only my family and closest friends knew. I would tell no one until I felt safe enough to share my dark past - the years I was sexually abused, from age 10 to 14, my resulting promiscuity as a teenager, and finally, at 14, my becoming pregnant."

"I imagined that every person on the street was going to point their finger at me and scream, 'Pregnant at 14, you wicked girl!'"

"But no one said a word. Not strangers, not even people I knew. I was shocked. Nobody treated me differently. For 20 years, I had been expecting a reaction that never came."

"And I soon realized that having the secret out was liberating. What I learned for sure was that holding the shame was the greatest burden of all."
Oprah writes about the experience in her column under the title "My First Betrayal" as the theme for the latest issue of her magazine is "My First...".

ROBBIE TO STRIP AT ELTON'S BIRTHDAY

Robbie Williams is to strip at Elton John's 60th birthday party.
The flamboyant singer is celebrating reaching the landmark age on March 25 with a special performance at New York's Madison Square Garden. It will be the 60th time he has played at the world famous venue.

Elton is said to have asked his friend Robbie, 32, to perform on the night and make the day extra-special, and the "Angles" singer has obliged by offering to do a striptease while performing classic Tom Jones hit "You Can Leave Your Hat On".

The song is synonymous with stripping after it was used to soundtrack a male stripping scene in hit British comedy film "The Full Monty", which starred Robert Carlyle.
A source told Britain's Daily Star newspaper: "Robbie knows this is one gift Elton won't be able to out do."

"The pair love to shock each other, so Elton will probably already be cooking up something for Robbie's birthday next month."

Robbie and openly gay Elton - whose partner is film producer David Furnish – previously fell out after Robbie, in his autobiography "Feel", described the pop legend as "weird", and claimed he "kidnapped" him when he was suffering from alcoholism, forcing him to go to rehab. However, the two have now patched up their differences and are "best pals again".

The special birthday concert is to be broadcast as a 90-minute TV special on British network ITV.

BUNDCHEN BLAMES PARENTS FOR ANOREXIA

Gisele Bundchen says the fashion industry is not responsible for causing young girls to suffer from anorexia - insisting it is the parents fault.
The 26-year-old supermodel is adamant the families of anorexic girls are to blame for their problems, not the super-slim bodies promoted by models on the catwalks.
Gisele told Brazil's Globo newspaper: "I never suffered from this problem because I had a very strong family base. The parents are responsible, not fashion."

"Everybody knows the standard for models is to be thin, but you can't generalize and say that all models are anorexic."

In recent months, the weight of models has become the subject of an international debate as to whether the current trend for very skinny models is encouraging eating disorders in influential young girls.

Last September, underweight models were banned from Madrid Fashion week and in December Italian designers introduced a requirement for models to submit proof that they do no suffer from an eating disorder.

Four women in Gisele's home country of Brazil died last month from anorexia, including 21-year-old model Ana Carolina Reston. The supermodel, who previously dated Leonardo DiCaprio, left home aged 14 for a three-month modeling job in Japan, but said she always had the support of her family.

She said: "You leave home, the protection of your parents, but you still know you have their support."

STAR-STRUCK BEYONCE KNOWLES

The 25-year-old star was so overwhelmed when she saw Diana Ross - who Beyonce's "Dreamgirls" character is loosely based on - that she was too nervous to speak to her. Beyonce told Britain's Daily Telegraph newspaper: "I was so nervous, it was like she wasn't real."

"She is such a legend, and I had been studying her for so long, and suddenly she was right next to me."

"I was too nervous to say anything because I didn't know how she felt about the movie, but she told me she was a big fan and wishes me luck. I felt I could breathe again."

"Dreamgirls," which was inspired by the true story of 60s singing sensations Diana Ross and The Supremes, is Beyonce's biggest movie role to date.

The multi-talented star shot to fame with girl group "Destiny's Child" before having huge success as a solo artist.
Beyonce, whose is rumored to be engaged to US rapper Jay-Z, is hoping "Dreamgirls" will be a real boost for her movie career.

She also revealed she may focus on acting rather than singing in the future. Beyonce said: "After this movie, I feel that I'm an actor."

"If there's another movie like this that I'm able to be a part of, then I would be willing to put music to the side."

AGUILERA TRIUMPHS AT NRJ MUSIC AWARDS

The "Dirrty" singer scooped International Female Artist of the Year and International Album of the Year, for "Back to Basics," at the ceremony in Cannes - which is France's equivalent of the BRITs. But according to insiders, the two awards weren't enough to make Christina happy. She was left furious when she lost out on her number-one choice of hotel suite to Gwen Stefani.

Christina had her sights set on the $6,000-a-night presidential suite at the Carlton hotel on the seafront, but was forced to settle for a $4,000-a-night suite at the Martinez instead, after mom-of-one Gwen booked it first. It was the hotel staff at the Martinez that paid for the fiery pop superstar 's disappointment.

A porter told Britain's Daily Mirror newspaper: "We took all her bags up to her room but we didn't even get a tip. We took flowers up as well and still, nothing." Mandy Moore: I struggled with depression

Mandy Moore has a lot going for her, including a starring role opposite Diane Keaton in the upcoming comedy "Because I Said So." Even so, she says she's grappled with depression.

"A few months ago I felt really low, really sad. Depressed for no reason," the 22-year-old actress-singer says in an interview in the February issue of Jane magazine, on newsstands Tuesday.

"I'm a very positive person, and I've always been glass-half-full," she continues. "So it was like someone flipped a switch in me."
Moore, newly single after high-profile relationships with actor Zach Braff and tennis standout Andy Roddick, says her recent split with Braff didn't help matters.

"The breakup added to what I was going through, but it's not the complete reason," she tells the magazine. "It definitely doesn't help if you're already in that place ... ."
Moore started out as a squeaky-clean teen singer and later crossed over into movies with featured roles in such films as "A Walk to Remember," "Saved" and "American Dreamz."

"I feel bad that people wasted their money on such trite, blah pop music," says Moore about her earlier music.
Moore, who is working on a new record, has been looking inward a lot of late.

"I've been going through this really crazy time in my life — it's what I imagine people fresh out of college go through," she says. "I'm asking life-altering questions, like `Who am I? Where do I fit in this world? What am I doing, what do I want to do? Am I living to my full potential?'"

PINK SAYS FAREWELL TO ELVIS

Pink is building a miniature version of Elvis Presley's famous Graceland home to bury her dead dog in.The singer was left devastated this week when she returned home to her Los Angeles mansion find her beloved bulldog Elvis had drowned in her swimming pool.

Pink named the pooch after the late rock 'n' roll legend because he was given to her as a gift by Elvis' daughter Lisa Marie Presley and the two have now decided to give the dog a funeral fit for "The King."

As well as building a replica Graceland to use as a crypt for the dog, Pink has also hired a 70-piece orchestra to play a selection of Elvis' classic hits on the day of the funeral.

The pet will reportedly be pulled to his final resting place on a mini-carriage by four canine pallbearers and the 27-year-old singer is even planning to erect a huge marble statue of her deceased pet in her garden as a memorial to him.

Pink – who is married to motocross racer Carey Hart - said: "I want to remember him as he was."

"I loved him so much. But I can't get that final image of him floating in that pool out of my head."

A source said: "She has spent two days solid planning this funeral with Lisa-Marie. Elvis was like a child to Pink and Carey so she's not cutting any corners."

PARIS HILTON WANTS EYE SURGERY

Paris Hilton is considering plastic surgery to correct her drooping left eyelid, it has been claimed.
The hotel heiress allegedly paid a recent visit to a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon's office with her sister Nicky to make enquiries.

A source told the New York Post newspaper: "She wanted to fix her drooping left eyelid."

Paris, 25, - currently working up to ten hours a day filming new movie "The Hottie and the Nottie" - has apparently been aggravating the problem by wearing tinted contact lenses.

The "Simple Life" star has naturally brown eyes but has always worn blue tinted contact lenses to keep up her Barbie-style image.

The source said: "Her eyes have been drying out lately. She is ignoring doctors' orders not to wear her tinted contacts."

Paris' representative Elliot Mintz said: "To the best of my knowledge, Paris has never had any kind of cosmetic surgery and has not mentioned any medical procedures having to do with her eyes."

Jennifer Connelly and Paul Bettany are considering adopting an African orphan.

The "A Beautiful Mind" star Jennifer, who visited orphanages in Mozambique while filming her new movie "The Blood Diamond," is considering returning to the country to adopt an orphan.
jennifer told Britain's Independent newspaper: "We absolutely considered adopting."

"We have a son who went through a separation of his parents and then a new stepfather and a new sibling. He's had a lot of change so I have to be sensitive to him."

"These are reasons why I didn't come home with a child even though, believe me, I would call Paul at night when he was away."

"I'd say, 'There's this baby and I don't know what to do and I love him so much and if I leave here he might die.' It's complicated, but we are still considering."
The "Labyrinth" star has a nine-year-old son, Kai, from her relationship with photographer David Dugan and a three-year-old son Stellan with husband Paul.

Jennifer spent all her free time between filming in the orphanage and found it difficult to say goodbye to the children she befriended.
She said: "Leaving them was just devastating. I've tried to stay in touch. You start to forge friendships and then you leave, and I had to ask myself was it worse to have gone and created relationships and been another person who left? Or would it have been wrong to have done nothing at all?

Celebrity branding has never been hotter — or more bizarre.

KISS rocker Gene Simmons is peddling an "elegant" new perfume. Guitar god Carlos Santana has a new line of sexy women's shoes. And "Two and Half Men" star Charlie Sheen is shaking up the kiddie couture market.

Why are these already successful stars branching out into what appears to be foreign and very unlikely territory?

You guessed right: It's all about the Benjamins.

“It doesn’t have to make sense,” Simmons told FOXNews.com. “What does KISS have to do with shampoo or coffee? Nothing. The reason to get involved in anything is commerce.”

There are other odd pairings. Donald Trump, a known teetotaler, just launched Trump Super Premium Vodka. Rocker Jon Bon Jovi is the co-founder of the Rock Star Baby line of baby gear. And actor Jackie Chan recently launched an organic skin care line.

Rage Against the Machine will reunite for Coachella
Rage Against the Machine, the seminal L.A. band that made heavy music into political manifesto, will reunite after a seven-year lull for one show as the headliners at the 2007 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

Sources say Rage, which played the main stage at the first Coachella in 1999, will be joined by other familiar faces for the eighth edition of the festival, which covers three days this year and begins April 27: Red Hot Chili Peppers, which headlined in 2003, are back, as is Björk, who topped the bill in 2002.

Organizers were mum this weekend and it was not clear which day Rage or the other acts were slotted to play; that announcement is expected in the next few days. Other acts expected in the eclectic lineup: Arcade Fire, Interpol, Willie Nelson, the Roots, Manu Chao, the Decemberists, Arctic Monkeys, Sonic Youth, Crowded House, Air, Tiësto and Kings of Leon.Tickets go on sale Saturday, via Ticketmaster. Three-day passes will cost about $250 and there will be a limited number of single-day passes available.

The headliners are not novel, but they are potent. The Peppers are up for their first best album Grammy right now, and Björk remains a mesmerizing figure to fans of avant pop. But in Southern California rock circles, there is very little that could compete with the excitement of a Rage Against the Machine reunion. The quartet's hybrid of funk, rap, metal and leftist ideology was as subtle as a Molotov cocktail; in the 1990s, its aggro-anthems made it the only band that mattered to a fan base that included East L.A. protest kids as well as those in Hollywood punk circles, college dorms and mainstream rock festival mosh pits, where politics were secondary to the group's feral energy.

Oscar nominees seem easy to pick

LOS ANGELES, California Martin Scorsese's thriller "The Departed" is almost certain to grab a slot in the Oscar race for best film, along with the musical "Dreamgirls" and the comedy "Little Miss Sunshine," when Academy Award nominations are announced on Tuesday.

Oscar pundits say those three films are likely to square off against "Babel," a saga of clashing cultures, and "The Queen," a portrait of the British royal family, in the competition for Hollywood's highest honors.

All five already have been nominated for best picture by two of Hollywood's most influential trade groups -- the Directors Guild of America and the Producers Guild of America -- whose picks usually predict Oscar sentiment.

"This year we've seen unprecedented agreement among the guild awards for five front-runners for best picture," said Tom O'Neil, awards columnist for the Web site theenvelope.com. "It's a fairly easy year to predict the nominations."

"Babel" and "Dreamgirls," the film adaptation of a Broadway hit loosely based on the Motown music group Diana Ross & the Supremes, gained momentum last week by winning Golden Globe awards in the categories of best film drama and best comedy or musical.

Hollywood on edge

THE race for the most coveted awards in Hollywood enters the final stretch tomorrow (AEDT) as nominations for the 79th Oscars are unveiled.

Most of Los Angeles will be fast asleep when the nominees are revealed at a 5.30am (12.30am Wednesday, AEDT) ceremony, triggering the start of four frenzied weeks of studio campaigning ahead of Tinseltown's big night on February 25. Until now, no single film has emerged as the favourite to dominate across multiple categories, even though clear front-runners have emerged for the top prizes - best picture, best director, best actor and actress.

"There are definite favourites for most of the marquee awards but ultimately I think you'll see the gold shared across several films," said Tom O'Neil, a columnist with the Los Angeles Times's theenvelope.com

In the best picture race, Golden Globes winner Babel, Martin Scorsese's gangster drama The Departed and the musical Dreamgirls head the field with The Queen and offbeat comedy Little Miss Sunshine making up the numbers. However, analysts believe that there is still a chance Clint Eastwood's groundbreaking war drama Letters from Iwo Jima, shot entirely in Japanese, could enter the reckoning.

The critically acclaimed United 93, a fictionalised dramatization of the passenger uprising on one of the planes hijacked on September 11, 2001, is also seen as a possible outside bet. In the best director category, Eastwood again could upset the form book. Scorsese, the overwhelming favourite to win this year's award having been passed over on five previous occasions, is likely to be the first name on most voters' ballots.

Babel director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu is also a certainty for a nomination, along with Bill Condon of Dreamgirls and Stephen Frears of The Queen. Although the husband-and-wife team of Little Miss Sunshine, Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, have been expected to make up the five nominees, analysts believe they could be bumped out by Eastwood.

The veteran actor-director is a perennial favourite with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences's nearly 6000 voters, with two best director awards already, 1992's Unforgiven and Million Dollar Baby two years ago.

And his unique achievement in shooting two war films back-to-back, Flags of our Fathers and Letters From Iwo Jima, movies about the same battle viewed from American and Japanese perspectives, has won many admirers.

"I've talked to so many directors who tell me how impressed they are by Clint Eastwood's achievement doing two movies," said pundit Pete Hammond of hollwoodwiretap.com. "They're blown away by it."

Britney Spears's New Man: 'A Gentleman'

Britney Spears's new man, Isaac Cohen, looks like a keeper – at least according to his agent.

"He's a gentleman, he's respectful and he treats people nicely," Brandi Lord of L.A. Models tells USA Today. "He's not known to date around."
Spears and Cohen, both 25, were first spotted powerboating on Jan. 2 off Marina del Rey, Calif., and they recently returned from a lavish weekend in Las Vegas, where they stayed in the $40,000-a-night, two-story Hugh Hefner Sky Villa at The Palms.

"They're a young couple who seem to be having a lot of fun," says Lord, who previously told PEOPLE Cohen is "not a player – he's got a great heart and a good family, and he was raised well."
The 6'1" California native, currently appearing in TV ads for McDonald's and Payless, is different from Britney's ex, Kevin Federline, in at least one respect: "He's not out to be a rapper or a dancer or an actor or anything else right now," Lord tells USA Today. "I'm sure he will want to do something else when he gets older, but for right now, modeling is working out pretty well for him. He's got a great look."

Cohen has been with the L.A. Models agency for several years, Lord says, adding that since he's been linked to Spears, "he's even more in demand."Spears has been hard at work herself, working on her new album at L.A.'s Record Plant studio on Wednesday night. Friday Jan 19, 2007 8:00am EST

Angelina Jolie Travels to Vietnam

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt may be setting up house in New Orleans, but Jolie wasn't there last week – she was in Vietnam. The actress traveled to the Asian country to take a meeting on behalf of the Maddox Jolie-Pitt Project, her charity aiding her son's native country of Cambodia.

According to MJP co-president Stephan Bognar, he and Jolie met with officials from the International Finance Corporation's Mekong Private Sector Development Facility, a privately funded World Bank initiative that promotes economic development in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.

Despite Internet rumors, Pitt was in New Orleans, where he's filming The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and couldn't make the trip – and Jolie was not in Vietnam for another adoption.

Now the actors, along with kids Maddox, 5, Zahara, 2, and Shiloh, 7 months, are back together in the Big Easy, where Pitt and Jolie recently bought a six-bedroom, $3.5 million house.

Pitt is also been working on a development project of his own in the city: He worked with the environmental organization Global Green USA to find an Earth-friendly plan for rebuilding neighborhoods ravaged by Katrina – a project that is on track to begin construction in February or March.

Daniel Barenboim plays Carnegie 50 years later

Daniel Barenboim was a model of modesty.
Becoming the first person to play Carnegie Hall on the exact 50th anniversary of his debut, he walked onto the stage Saturday night in a black cutaway with a black shirt and sat in front of the Steinway. There weren't any speeches or any signs. In the program, there was only a small mention of his accomplishment.

Then, over the next 2 1/2 hours, he gave an elegant performance of Book I of Bach's "The Well-Tempered Clavier," the opening of a two-day series that concluded with Book II on Sunday.

When he made his Carnegie debut as a 14-year-old in 1957, he played Prokofiev's First Piano Concerto with conductor Leopold Stokowski and the NBC Symphony of the Air. While studying in Paris under Nadia Boulanger in Paris, he auditioned for Stokowski, and those lessons with Boulanger helped determine what he chose to play for his golden anniversary at Carnegie.

"When I arrived for my first lesson, `The Well-Tempered Clavier' was on the music stand of the grand piano. She turned the pages forward and back; finally she settled on the Prelude in E minor from Book I," he wrote in a program note. "She held a wooden ruler in her hand, and every time my fingers played a wrong note, she tapped them with it. Thus, `The Well-Tempered Clavier' became the foundation for everything."Book I, composed from about 1710-22, gave rise to a second book, composed from 1738-44. Each book begins in C-Major, continues with C-Minor and goes on until No. 24, in B-Minor. Some in the audience followed along on scores, apparently interested in noting which edition Barenboim was using.

Just as well known for his conducting, he seems to view the piano as an ensemble of keys that come together as much as a singular instrument. In his program note, he says he emphasizes harmony in his playing of the Bach, an approach that has been criticized by some, who prefer the counterpoint.

Paula Abdul, 'Idol' judges say they're no crueler now

"American Idol" judges Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul say they're no crueler than usual this year, and that people who audition should know what they're going to get.

"If you don't want to hear that, don't show up," Cowell told television writers at a news conference on Saturday.....

The talent show returned with a storm this past week, with episodes on Tuesday and Wednesday attracting around 37 million viewers. The episodes featured auditions by the good, the bad and the awful from Minneapolis and Seattle.Cowell, whose reputation for blunt, nasty put-downs was established at the series' beginning, was in peak form, telling one contestant that his singing was horrendous and he looked like a "bush baby." Jackson told one contestant his audition was awful and perhaps ruined his business.

"You shouldn't be a vocal teacher," Jackson said. "I wouldn't take vocal lessons from you, I wouldn't tell anybody to take vocal lessons from you."

On ABC's "The View" this past week, Rosie O'Donnell lashed out at the way contestants were treated by "three millionaires, one probably intoxicated."

"If you keep serving people crap and telling them it's a meal, they're eventually going to think it is a meal," O'Donnell said.

Jackson said the judges are continually surprised at how people who should know they can't sing show up thinking they have a chance. They should see what it takes by the people who have won before, he said.

"I think they're aware that they're not very good and they're going to have a bad time," Cowell said.

Jackson cited William Hung, who won fame through his famously bad "She Bang" audition a few years back. "Do you think that William Hung is mad that he came on the show?" he asked.During the Seattle audition, the show aired a performance of "God Bless America" by Jonathan Jayne, who was criticized by the judges. The New York Times later reported that Jayne had said he had appeared in Special Olympics, an event for the mentally challenged.

Ken Warwick, one of the show's producers, said it was not possible to look into the backgrounds of everyone on the show.Abdul also faced questions Saturday about a television appearance, circulated through a YouTube clip, where she appeared loopy. She blamed the appearance on technical difficulties that made her hear questions from two different reporters in her earpiece at the same time.

Kristin Chenoweth, buoyant in Met performance

Kristin Chenoweth has an outsized personality that shines best on stage, even one as vast as the Metropolitan Opera. And there she was Friday, giving her all in a solo concert backed by 12 sterling musicians, two dancers and, for several numbers, the Juilliard Choral Union.

Chenoweth's musical-theater technique, seen in such Broadway shows as "Wicked," "You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown" and "The Apple Tree," is so effortless, it seems instinctive. And she used it to good advantage at the Met, particularly during the first half of the evening.

For Chenoweth fans, the entertainment before intermission consisted mostly of material she has done before — comic numbers such as "Popular," "The Girl in 14G" and "Taylor, the Latte Boy." They are songs she has sung either in musicals, previous concert appearances (at smaller venues) or on CD.

Wearing a short red dress, the effervescent Chenoweth, under the guidance of director Kathleen Marshall, scampered with ease across the wide stage. She's a gleeful, game performer, moving with confidence even when hoofing with such experienced dancers as David Elder and Sean Martin Hingston in the sweetly nostalgic "Goin' to the Dance with You."Even with a sound system that was a bit muddy — a situation corrected for the most part by Act 2 — her buoyant personality came through.

The second half was more formal, and Chenoweth returned after the break in a tight-fitting, strapless blue gown that made one fear for a wardrobe malfunction. Trained as an opera singer, she was right at home in "Italian Street Song," from Victor Herbert's "Naughty Marietta" as well as in a Gilbert and Sullivan medley that was awash in trills.
