The couple - who have previously denied they are dating - met on the set of romantic comedy "You, Me and Dupree" and were seen together on several occasions after Hudson filed for divorce from rocker Chris Robinson shortly after the film was released last autumn.
Wilson has now spent a week in Australia with the "Almost Famous" actress who is filming her latest movie "Fool's Gold" with Matthew McConaughey in Queensland. A source told the New York Daily News newspaper: "Owen backed out of spending Christmas and New Year with Kate because he didn't want to deal with the whole situation with her family."
"There was Chris and the baby, and also her parents Goldie and Kurt don't approve of the relationship."
Hudson, 27, is the daughter of Goldie Hawn and 'step-daughter' of Goldie's long-term partner Kurt Russell. She has a three-year-old son, Ryder, with estranged husband Robinson.
A representative for Wilson has said he is currently in India. However, a source on set in Australia said: "Kate had a very close, friendly relationship with the paparazzi on set, but she changed her tune earlier this week."
