Kate Winslet Wins Libel Damages over Diet Claims

Kate Winslet has won undisclosed libel damages from a magazine that accused her of using a diet doctor.

Britain's glossy Grazia magazine printed allegations in early February saying the five-time Oscar nominee had approached a doctor for help with her weight, despite the fact that she has previously said she will not bow to Hollywood pressure to be skinny.

"I am delighted that this matter has been resolved, and the record set straight," Winslet said in a statement after Friday's win. "I am not a hypocrite. I have always been, and shall continue to be, honest when it comes to body/weight issues."

London legal reps for the mother-of-two Winslet launched libel proceedings against the magazine and on Friday won an apology, along with damages and legal costs.

In the article, headlined "Kate's mystery visits to diet doctor," Dr Yi Pan discussed treatments he offered celebrities at his Chinese Healing Insitute in California. Winslet, it was revealed in court, did receive treatment from Dr Pan, but for a neck injury and not for weight loss.

"[Grazia] stated [in the article]... that Kate had approached a doctor for help with her weight despite the fact that she has previously said that she will not bow to Hollywood pressure of being skinny," her attorney, Rachel Atkins, from law firm Schillings told the court Friday. "The article suggested she had lied to the public."

Approached by PEOPLE, reps for Grazia declined to comment on the decision, nor did they reveal the extent of damages and legal costs they must pay. Winslet has announced that the damages she receives will go to help people with eating disorders.

"Grazia magazine has apologized to me in full, and admitted that their story was incorrect, which gives me tremendous peace of mind," Winslet added in her statement. "I feel very strongly that 'curves' are natural, womanly and real."

"I shall continue to hope that women are able to believe in themselves for who they are inside, and not feel under such incredible pressure to be unnaturally thin," she said. "I am donating the 'damages' given to me by Grazia, to an eating disorder charity."
