Hawkins tipped for Eurovision win

Former Darkness frontman Justin Hawkins is the favourite to become the UK's Eurovision Song Contest entrant. The musician, who will perform a duet with Beverlei Brown, is tipped ahead of Big Brovaz, ex-East 17 star Brian Harvey and newcomer Cyndi.

Atomic Kitten's Liz McClarnon and reformed pop quartet Scooch are trailing in the bookmakers' odds. Saturday's Making Your Mind Up show is on BBC One at 1930 GMT, and the result will be revealed from 2130 GMT.

Guaranteed Hawkins has admitted that it is "everybody's dream to represent their country at the highest level".

"I think it's the biggest, most glamorous and possibly the most important music event there is," added the performer. Sir Terry Wogan, who will host the show along with Fearne Cotton, said: "Who knows, this could be the year that the UK makes it into the Top 10."

The UK is the last of 42 countries taking part in this year's contest in Helsinki to select their song.

The event's qualifying round will take place on 10 May, in which 28 countries will compete for 10 places in the final. The UK has a guaranteed berth in the final two days later as one of the biggest financial contributors to the contest, along with France, Germany and Spain.

In 2006 Daz Sampson's song Teenage Life finished 19th in Athens, while the UK last finished in the top ten five years ago.
