Hammond bid for Woman's Hour role

Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond is competing for a guest presenting role on BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour.

He is up against broadcaster Kelvin MacKenzie and comedian Andy Hamilton for the one-off appearance on Comic Relief's Red Nose Day, 16 March.

A public phone vote will decide who co-presents alongside Martha Kearney.

Hammond returned to presenting BBC Two's Top Gear earlier this year, four months after a 280mph crash during filming left him fighting for his life.

He was given a hero's welcome on his return to the show, which showed footage of the jet-powered car crash.

Hammond suffered serious brain injuries in the accident at Elvington airfield, near York, in September, but left hospital just five weeks later.

Woman's Hour was presented by a man, Alan Ivimey, when it launched in 1946.

It became Man's Hour, for one day only, on 1 January 2005, with Channel 4 newsreader Jon Snow at the helm.
