Boys And Girls In America |
You read the lyric sheet and it’s all about teenagers and young rockers getting stoned and out of hand and kids lapsing into comas and having sex. And it’s readily apparent that the Hold Steady’s Craig Finn hasn’t been staying in many four star hotels with his Brooklyn-based quintet as they try to transform into a modern day heartland rock band on their third full length album. Louder than ever -- with a new emphasis on keyboards and orchestration, lending them a Springsteen-Meat Loaf- West Side Story vibe -- the Hold Steady have grand ambition dripping from every angle. As singer and writer, Finn tries out a few extra notes, conquers the power ballad with “First Night,” sends the band crashing into Thin Lizzy for “Hot Soft Light” and into the Eagles for the album’s closer “Southtown Girls.” Finn loves words and his guitarist Tad Kubler loves riffs. Together, they make a classic duo in pursuit of classic rock. |
